Tour of Sagamore Farms for 6 people. Located in Glyndon, MD and founded in 1925, Sagamore Farms has a long-standing history in the MD horse racing industry. This privately owned farm gained popularity in 1933 when Alfred G. Vanderbilt, Jr., bequeathed it for his 21st birthday. Under Vanderbilt’s guidance the farm became internationally recognized as a premier training and breeding facility for the next half century. The Queen of England herself kept a broodmare on the property during its heyday. The farm has held studs such as 1935 English Triple Crown winner, Bahram, and Kauai King who won both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness in 1966. The farm’s most famous equine native is Native Dancer, known as the Galloping Grey Ghost. He went 21 for 22 during his racing career which spanned 1952-1954. In 1952 Native Dancer won both the     Preakness and Belmont Stakes. Sagamore Farms best known racehorses were Discovery, Bed o’ Roses and Native Dancer, who were all inducted into the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame.

Vanderbilt eventually sold the farm to developer James Ward in 1986 and in 2007 Maryland native Kevin Plank, CEO and founder of Under Armour, purchased the farm with a long-term plan of major restoration. Plank is playing a     significant role in helping to restore the racing community in Maryland and build popularity around it by restoring S   agamore Farms into what it used to be and better. Many restorations have already happened in such a short time, and Plank hopes to give the indoor track a face-lift and that Sagamore Farms will produce a Triple Crown winner in the future.
