Nantucket is an island located approximately 30 miles south of Cape Cod in Massachusetts. The island has a rich heritage as a fishing village and as the home port for the largest fleet of whaling vessels in the world. Nantucket’s whaling era is celebrated in Herman Melville’s classic novel Moby Dick which borrows from the real-life tale of the whale ship "Essex" which was sunk by a whale. These days, this charming island looks like an idyllic postcard, peppered with pristine beaches, sailboat- and yacht-dotted harbors, cobblestoned streets and shingled homes with gardens filled with roses and hydrangeas. More than half the islands total land area of 50 square miles is preserved as forever wild. Home to a mix of islanders and vacationers in the summer, Nantucket retains a laid-back, casual charm. When you're not swimming or pedaling around the island, you can stroll streets lined with sophisticated shops and galleries or linger for a while at the many restaurants and bars.
