Holly Kratz works on wheel-thrown ceramics at her home studio and prefers to create pottery for every day enjoyment. In addition to using traditional glazes, she formulates her own crystalline glazes, one of the most challenging glazes to properly execute. They are based on high-fire recipes and adapted to Cone 6 Oxidation firing for her kiln. In a typical firing, after reaching peak temperature, the pieces are flash cooled and held for several hours at specific temperatures to allow crystals to grow in the still-molten glaze. The nature of the crystalline glaze process means every piece is truly one-of-a-kind.
