ART FOR UNDERSTANDING
A COLLABORATION BETWEEN RICHMOND BALLET, MATTER OF COLOR,
AND BINNS OF WILLIAMSBURG

Through our highly-acclaimed Minds In Motion program, Richmond Ballet continues to practice our commitment to creating more compassionate communities. Art for Understanding is a cultural exchange between Minds In Motion students in Virginia and Matter of Color, a group of artists from Israel. These two unique and culturally diverse groups will focus on empathy and understanding through letter exchanges, painting, and dance explorations, as well as research about each other’s background and cultures. This rich connection between communities across the world from one another will culminate in March with the Israeli painters’ mission to Virginia. This trip provides a unique opportunity for the artists from Israel to move with the young dancers from Virginia and the Minds In Motion dancers to create art with this unique and dedicated group of painters.

As part of this exchange, Matter of Color artists will create a special exhibition depicting their own interpretations of empathy and understanding. This series of paintings, over 100 in total, will be auctioned online starting in February 2018 and closing on Thursday, March 15, 2018. The success of the art auction fundraiser will be celebrated at an exhibition and event on March 15, sponsored by Binns of Williamsburg. Proceeds from the auction and related events will go to support the Minds In Motion program.

We invite you to be a part of this incredible exchange – an opportunity for our communities to meet each other personally, share and explore our similarities, and celebrate our rich cultural and personal differences. Explore the paintings up for bid on this website, visit the paintings on display across the Commonwealth, or find out how you can be involved by visiting our Art for Understanding Facebook page!

ABOUT MATTER OF COLOR

Matter of Color artists, headed up by their instructor and curator, Bruria Hassner of Tel Aviv, have been painting together for over two decades. The group comprises approximately 120 women and a few men who paint together several times a week and explore a variety of themes through the creation and expression of their art. The painters have traveled on Matter of Color missions throughout the world, benefiting children in places such as China and Bulgaria.

ABOUT MINDS IN MOTION

Minds In Motion, bringing the joy of movement and performance to students since 1995, is the cornerstone of Richmond Ballet’s Outreach programming. Nearly 2,000 students annually are rapidly transported into the world of dance through the inspiring curriculum that is brought to them through professional teaching artists and musicians.

Art for Understanding is sponsored by Binns of Williamsburg and the Virginia Israel Advisory Board.
